______________________________________________

Jill Bartine has been a teacher for more than half her life. As a classically-trained flutist who performs with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, her first outlet for her teaching passion was music.  She is thrilled to now include yoga to her teaching repertoire after completing her 200-hour RYT certification in August 2011.  By the fall of 2013, she had already logged over 1,000 teaching hours, which made her eligible to register with Yoga Alliance as an E-RYT 200 (Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher).  She also holds a Bachelor of Music in flute performance from Northwestern University and a Master of Music from the University of Tennessee.

Having never been a fitness buff, Jill stepped into her first yoga class in 2002, and it was love at first sight.  Over the years that she has practiced, she is continually amazed at the benefits yoga has brought to her life – physical fitness, better posture, mental clarity, self-confidence, increased flexibility on and off the mat, and a general sense of peace and gratitude.

Professional musical performance employs controlled breath, body awareness, energy, creativity, rhythmic flow, and harmony — all qualities of a successful yoga practice.  Jill draws upon these elements in her classes, helping her students to feel in tune with their bodies and spirit, and those around them.  She professes to have “yoga ADHD” and constantly seeks new ways to experience poses and offer them to her students in a dynamic, playful way.

Jill teaches power and vinyasa group classes at multiple studios in Knoxville and also enjoys teaching private sessions for individuals and small groups.

Slow Flow Yoga with Meryl Kerns @ Breezeway Yoga Studio
Sep 22 @ 9:30 am – 10:45 am

Love Vinyasa flow but think it’s just too fast? This class is for you!

In Slow Burn yoga, you will be challenged in a completely different way. Strengthen your body in a unique process by slowing down the creative flows, forcing you to ignite deeper, stabilizing muscles, focus and steady the mind to stay present and balanced, and become more flexible from holding stretches longer for a fuller release. This class welcomes students of all levels and will leave you with a better understanding of proper alignment and basic anatomy to take with you on your yoga journey.
75 minutes

Meryl’s journey of learning began in 2001, at the age of eleven, when she embarked on her martial arts path within the discipline of Kung Fu. She was trained by a second generation Si Fu assisted by a female Si Fu who was trained in massage therapy. The passion and knowledge of her two teachers, combined with the traditional approach of the school, inspired Meryl’s inquiry into the mechanics of the inner body and holistic healing. Later on, Meryl added Tai Chi to her martial arts practice, which further deepened her mind-body connection. It was Meryl’s female Si Fu who inspired her to pursue holistic healing, massage therapy, and yoga as a profession by treating her throughout the years as she attended the school.

In 2009, Meryl chose Asheville School of Massage and Yoga as the launching point for her education in massage therapy by completing 675 hours of school and completing her license massage training. The Asheville School of Massage and Yoga greatly emphasized the need for student self-care through yoga practice, as well as extending self-care awareness to clients. After starting her own practice,

Meryl quickly grew an extreme passion for the combination of massage and yoga. In 2013, she traveled to Costa Rica to complete her 200 hour yoga teacher training with Frog Lotus Yoga training program. Recently, at the beginning of 2017, she traveled to India to receive not only her 500 hour yoga teacher training  certification, but also a 50 hour yin yoga certification. After that then traveling to Spain to stay at the beautiful yoga retreat centre Suryalila for three months to continue her personal growth and deepen her

yoga knowledge. Now she’s back in Knoxville ready to share all the extensive knowledge and training to all who seek it.

Meryl has spent the last several years developing her skills by working in freelance. Her  working experiences have included practicing out of yoga studios, art festival healing sanctuaries, hospitality massage for multiple music venues, and private appointments. She currently practices integrated massages including Swedish, Deep Tissue, Shiatsu, Thai yoga, and her personal favorite: Myofascial Release. Her multi-faceted training and experience enable Meryl to treat each client with unique and intuitive approach,   inspiring them to take an active part in their own healing.

Gentle Yoga & Meditation with Wayne Stagg, RYT-200 @ Breezeway Yoga Studio
Sep 22 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

Gentle Yoga & Meditation with Wayne Stagg, RYT-200

Unlike Hatha Yoga, this gentle Kundalini class employs lots of movement but does not require precise alignment or advanced knowledge of yoga asanas.  Unlike vinyasa or Pilates, it’s not a physical workout in the usual sense.  The emphasis is on meditation, focusing on the breath to lead the movements and cultivating awareness of every sensation in the body.  We begin with gentle stretching of the spine and back, progressing through the legs and torso in a sequence expertly designed by KBK to awaken the innate energy we all possess. This practice aligns with Vedantan and Tantric traditions emphasizing integration and unity, experiencing the infinite in ourselves right here, right now in the very body we’re in. Some mantra is used, but it isn’t emphasized.  Class ends with about an eight-minute narrated relaxation in Shavasana (corpse pose). Donations are welcome but no one is turned away for lack of funds.

waynestaggWayne is retired from UT after 32 years in communications. He discovered Yoga through Hari Bhajan Kaur (HBK), a certified Kundalini instructor, and student of Yogi Bhajan and a founding member of his ashram in Espanola, NM. She modified a very rigorous practice to accommodate injuries sustained while serving in the US Air Force. The result is a gentle Kundalini class almost anyone can do. When she moved to Florida, she entrusted Wayne with the continuation of her classes. He has been teaching Yoga at the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church for 12 years. Alignment Yoga with Ron Felix – Multi-Level 2 and 3 @ Breezeway Yoga Studio
Sep 22 @ 6:30 pm – 7:15 pm

This class is an upper level class so you have already earned your stripes by being in several series of an alignment style (like Iyengar ) yoga at Level 1. This class builds on that beginner’s level, refines it with more advanced poses and introduces you to a theme type practice. A theme could be a class focusing on back bends or forward bends etc. In addition you will be working on an inversion practice as your knowledge and experience as a beginner has taught you what not to do as compared to what you can do.

This class is taught in an 8-week series but drop-ins @ $15/class will be allowed with permission from the teacher.

Yin Yang Yoga with Meryl Kerns @ Breezeway Yoga Studio
Sep 24 @ 9:30 am – 10:45 am

Yin Yang Yoga blends two styles of yoga into one practice – bringing together the benefits of passively holding yoga poses with more dynamic sequences and standing postures. Yin and Yang are the Taoist concepts which describe the two relative qualities present in everything. Yin is more internal, passive, cooling and downward. While Yang is more external, dynamic, warming and upward. When these terms are applied to yoga, Yin Yoga is a slower practice where poses are passively held for longer, working on the deep, dense (Yin) connective tissues and joints in the body. Yang Yoga, in contrast, refers to a more active practice working on the (Yang) muscles and blood flow, building strength, stamina and flexibility. This class is suitable for all levels with a heavier focus on yin. 75 minute class.

When did you stop singing? When did you stop being enchanted by stories? When did you stop being comforted by the sweet territory of silence?” ~ Gabrielle Roth
