Jill Bartine, M.M., RYT

JillB_headshotJill Bartine has been a teacher for more than half her life. As a classically-trained flutist who performs with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, her first outlet for her teaching passion was music.  She is thrilled to now include yoga to her teaching repertoire after completing her 200-hour RYT certification in August 2011.  By the fall of 2013, she had already logged over 1,000 teaching hours, which made her eligible to register with Yoga Alliance as an E-RYT 200 (Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher).  She also holds a Bachelor of Music in flute performance from Northwestern University and a Master of Music from the University of Tennessee.

Having never been a fitness buff, Jill stepped into her first yoga class in 2002, and it was love at first sight.  Over the years that she has practiced, she is continually amazed at the benefits yoga has brought to her life – physical fitness, better posture, mental clarity, self-confidence, increased flexibility on and off the mat, and a general sense of peace and gratitude.

Professional musical performance employs controlled breath, body awareness, energy, creativity, rhythmic flow, and harmony — all qualities of a successful yoga practice.  Jill draws upon these elements in her classes, helping her students to feel in tune with their bodies and spirit, and those around them.  She professes to have “yoga ADHD” and constantly seeks new ways to experience poses and offer them to her students in a dynamic, playful way.

Jill teaches power and vinyasa group classes at multiple studios in Knoxville and also enjoys teaching private sessions for individuals and small groups. Connect with Jill via email:  flutistyogini@gmail.com ,  facebook.com/flutistyogini,

Restorative Yin Yoga with Becky Maze, RYT-500 @ Breezeway Yoga Studio
Aug 18 @ 5:30 pm – 6:15 pm

RESTORATIVE YIN YOGA with Becky Maze, RYT-500

Restorative Yin yoga is a passive series of poses held for 3-5 minutes each. These poses target the deep connective tissues of the body and the fascia that cover the body to help regulate the flow of energy in the body. It is unique in that you relax in the posture. You soften and it can be meditative. Some benefits:

  • calms the mind
  • regulates energy
  • increases mobility, especially joints, connective tissue/flexibility
  • lowers stress/relaxation
  • greater stamina
  • lubricates joints
  • helps TMJ/migraines
  • aids in Yang practices (flow/vinyasa, etc)
  • teaches you to listen to your body

Practice both Yin/Yang (other types of Yoga) for balance.

“ I never liked Sunday evenings… weekend over, dreaded Monday morning looming… but some time ago, I discovered Becky’s Yin class and now I have something to look forward to at the close of the weekend. Becky’s classes are never repetitive… she expertly guides her yogis through a different series of yin poses each week, accompanied by soft eclectic music that really enhances the relaxing and soothing experience in mind and body. This class is a wonderful way to begin your week.”

“Becky’s classes always have a nice flow and I leave feeling relaxed and restored for my week ahead. She is a great and caring yoga teacher!”

“ Becky takes the student through a series of stretches that are held for longer periods of time.  She pairs the stretches with music which helps me to focus on the stretch.  At the end of a session, I feel both stretched and relaxed at the same time.”

Becky Maze is a Knoxville native and has shown an interest in yoga since her college days. She is also a Dental Hygienist and holds a B.S. in Health Education. Her desire to know yoga’s balance intensified in 2005 as her life changed and growing pains ensued. She studied yoga under Asheville’s Cindy Dollar (Iyengar Method) at the Glowing Body and she claims Patty Dougherty to be one of her most precious mentors. She has a love for vinyasa and yin and is a Reiki Master. Her personal yoga journey has brought her into a more balanced lifestyle, which she delights in sharing with others through teaching.

Yoga for Healing with Lindsey Kontovich @ breezeway yoga studio
Sep 9 @ 1:30 pm – 2:45 pm

Yoga for Healing  •  Monday at 1:30PM

Yoga for healing is a trauma informed yoga class that focuses on creating a safe, sensitive space for all students. Practicing yoga in a safe space led by a trained and trauma informed yoga teacher can be beneficial to healing from trauma and other mental health issues. First, trauma informed yoga allows students to have choices about their body and how it moves during the practice. Next, it can increase how they understand and sense their body both internally and externally. Furthermore, it can allow them to notice the present moment and how it is different from the past. Finally, it can assist students in gaining mastery over emotional regulation. This approach acknowledges that any student coming to a class may have experienced trauma, so all classes are taught with specific trauma informed principles in mind. The class is led by a licensed mental health professional who has been trained in creating the necessary space for healing.

_______________________

Some potential benefits of trauma informed yoga include:

—uses invitational language

— respects the physical space of students by not offering hands on assists

—encourages students to begin to notice how things change and flow inside the body

—increases self acceptance

—calms an overactive nervous system through activating the parasympathetic nervous system

— helps with grounding and orienting to the present

— provides skills for emotional regulation

—empowers students to reinhabit the body and befriend it again

Lindsey is a licensed mental health professional and yoga is a beautiful and important part of her self care and often recommends yoga to her clients. An avid runner, Lindsey has found yoga to be a nice balance to training and feels like her mat is a safe and grounding place to find a sense of calm. Bridging yoga and mental health seemed like a way to have the best of both worlds and after seeing how much the current research supports yoga as an adjunct to healing trauma, Lindsey began looking for a trauma informed yoga teacher training program. Lindsey received her 200 hour certification through K10 yoga school and became registered with Yoga Alliance in May of 2019. When Lindsey is not seeing clients, running, or practicing yoga, you can find her with her husband of 8 years, who is an ultra marathoner, and her two precious and wild children, Benton and Nora.

Please visit Lindsey’s website at lindseykontovich.com to learn more about her class offering and if you are ready to begin your healing journey.
