Slow Flow Yoga with Meryl Kerns @ Breezeway Yoga Studio

Love Vinyasa flow but think it’s just too fast? This class is for you!

In Slow Burn yoga, you will be challenged in a completely different way. Strengthen your body in a unique process by slowing down the creative flows, forcing you to ignite deeper, stabilizing muscles, focus and steady the mind to stay present and balanced, and become more flexible from holding stretches longer for a fuller release. This class welcomes students of all levels and will leave you with a better understanding of proper alignment and basic anatomy to take with you on your yoga journey.

Meryl’s journey of learning began in 2001, at the age of eleven, when she embarked on her martial arts path within the discipline of Kung Fu. She was trained by a second generation Si Fu assisted by a female Si Fu who was trained in massage therapy. The passion and knowledge of her two teachers, combined with the traditional approach of the school, inspired Meryl’s inquiry into the mechanics of the inner body and holistic healing. Later on, Meryl added Tai Chi to her martial arts practice, which further deepened her mind-body connection. It was Meryl’s female Si Fu who inspired her to pursue holistic healing, massage therapy, and yoga as a profession by treating her throughout the years as she attended the school.

In 2009, Meryl chose Asheville School of Massage and Yoga as the launching point for her education in massage therapy by completing 675 hours of school and completing her license massage training. The Asheville School of Massage and Yoga greatly emphasized the need for student self-care through yoga practice, as well as extending self-care awareness to clients. After starting her own practice,

Meryl quickly grew an extreme passion for the combination of massage and yoga. In 2013, she traveled to Costa Rica to complete her 200 hour yoga teacher training with Frog Lotus Yoga training program. Recently, at the beginning of 2017, she traveled to India to receive not only her 500 hour yoga teacher training  certification, but also a 50 hour yin yoga certification. After that then traveling to Spain to stay at the beautiful yoga retreat centre Suryalila for three months to continue her personal growth and deepen her

yoga knowledge. Now she’s back in Knoxville ready to share all the extensive knowledge and training to all who seek it.

Meryl has spent the last several years developing her skills by working in freelance. Her  working experiences have included practicing out of yoga studios, art festival healing sanctuaries, hospitality massage for multiple music venues, and private appointments. She currently practices integrated massages including Swedish, Deep Tissue, Shiatsu, Thai yoga, and her personal favorite: Myofascial Release. Her multi-faceted training and experience enable Meryl to treat each client with unique and intuitive approach,   inspiring them to take an active part in their own healing.

This class series are for students who already have some experience under their belt. We dive deeper into the Acro practice playing with low foot to hand, pops, turns and twists, dynamic movements and washing machines.  Class is co-taught assisted by Frank Genovise.

Prerequisites include*: Hands-free Bird mount; Hands free bird presses; Cartwheel in to straddle bat; Hop to Star. Rebekah has been practicing yoga for almost ten years and completed her 200-hour Yoga Teacher Certification Training at the Asheville Yoga Center in North Carolina. She has been practicing AcroYoga since 2011 and is a certified instructor through AcroYoga International. After several years of teaching both in the US and internationally, she is excited to be offering weekly acro classes in Knoxville. Frank Genovise co-teaches most classes. 

AcroYoga is a dynamic partner practice that blends the wisdom of yoga, the dynamic power of acrobatics, and the loving kindness of healing arts.  New content is explored each week while reviewing components taught in previous classes and workshops. Mindful Gentle Flow is a moderate mindful flow class with a strong focus on breath, internal awareness of sensation, and body alignment. We will explore the postures and work our way into waking up the body to help you step into your day. This class is for all levels with a general understanding of yoga and meditation. With regular weekly devoted practice my students often find:

• Improved energy levels and sleep

• Clearing the effects of a stressful lifestyle

Gina is a Licensed Massage Therapist, CranioSacral Therapist, and RYT 200 hour Yoga Instructor, Spiritual Counselor using a wide range of holistic modalities that capture the true healing potential in everyone.  Noon Flow is a vinyasa flow, incorporating many different postures which are woven into a sequence with breath, mindful alignment, and a meditative focus. 


Caroline has been practicing yoga for the past 20 years. She recently fulfilled her dream and received her 200-hour RYT at the Asheville Yoga Center in March 2018. Caroline has always known the power of yoga to heal the body, mind and spirit on all levels. Yoga has become a way of life for Caroline and she infuses that with her passion for health and well-being in her healing practice. Caroline is a Licensed Massage Therapist, Certified Eden Energy Medicine Clinical Practitioner, Authorized Teacher of Eden Energy Medicine 101/102, and Reiki Master/Teacher. Caroline is passionate about her work and loves working in partnership with her clients and students to achieve greater health, vitality and well-being in all aspects of their lives. As a classically-trained flutist who performs with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, her first outlet for her teaching passion was music.  She is thrilled to now include yoga to her teaching repertoire after completing her 200-hour RYT certification in August 2011.  By the fall of 2013, she had already logged over 1,000 teaching hours, which made her eligible to register with Yoga Alliance as an E-RYT 200 (Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher).  She also holds a Bachelor of Music in flute performance from Northwestern University and a Master of Music from the University of Tennessee.

Having never been a fitness buff, Jill stepped into her first yoga class in 2002, and it was love at first sight.  Over the years that she has practiced, she is continually amazed at the benefits yoga has brought to her life – physical fitness, better posture, mental clarity, self-confidence, increased flexibility on and off the mat, and a general sense of peace and gratitude.

Professional musical performance employs controlled breath, body awareness, energy, creativity, rhythmic flow, and harmony — all qualities of a successful yoga practice.  Jill draws upon these elements in her classes, helping her students to feel in tune with their bodies and spirit, and those around them.  She professes to have “yoga ADHD” and constantly seeks new ways to experience poses and offer them to her students in a dynamic, playful way.

Restorative Yin Yoga with Becky Maze, RYT-500 @ Breezeway Yoga Studio

RESTORATIVE YIN YOGA with Becky Maze, RYT-500

Restorative Yin yoga is a passive series of poses held for 3-5 minutes each. These poses target the deep connective tissues of the body and the fascia that cover the body to help regulate the flow of energy in the body. It is unique in that you relax in the posture. You soften and it can be meditative. Some benefits:

  • calms the mind
  • regulates energy
  • increases mobility, especially joints, connective tissue/flexibility
  • lowers stress/relaxation
  • greater stamina
  • lubricates joints
  • helps TMJ/migraines
  • aids in Yang practices (flow/vinyasa, etc)
  • teaches you to listen to your body

Practice both Yin/Yang (other types of Yoga) for balance.

Becky Maze is a Knoxville native and has shown an interest in yoga since her college days. She is also a Dental Hygienist and holds a B.S. in Health Education. Her desire to know yoga’s balance intensified in 2005 as her life changed and growing pains ensued. She studied yoga under Asheville’s Cindy Dollar (Iyengar Method) at the Glowing Body and she claims Patty Dougherty to be one of her most precious mentors. She has a love for vinyasa and yin and is a Reiki Master. Her personal yoga journey has brought her into a more balanced lifestyle, which she delights in sharing with others through teaching.

Her practice has helped her find personal strength, stress relief and an inner knowing that “all is well.” Cheri loves to encourage others to let go of what doesn’t serve them and embrace their magnificence. Her classes are designed to compliment any lifestyle and ability level. They are geared to open student’s  to their true potential; physically, spiritually, and creatively. Cheri is a clay and mixed media artist. She teaches ‘Healing through Art Classes” at The Cancer Support Community. Cheri is happily married for over 25 years, mom to three sons who all attend the University of Tennessee and loves living in KnoxVegas! As a classically-trained flutist who performs with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, her first outlet for her teaching passion was music.  She is thrilled to now include yoga to her teaching repertoire after completing her 200-hour RYT certification in August 2011.  By the fall of 2013, she had already logged over 1,000 teaching hours, which made her eligible to register with Yoga Alliance as an E-RYT 200 (Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher).  She also holds a Bachelor of Music in flute performance from Northwestern University and a Master of Music from the University of Tennessee.

Having never been a fitness buff, Jill stepped into her first yoga class in 2002, and it was love at first sight.  Over the years that she has practiced, she is continually amazed at the benefits yoga has brought to her life – physical fitness, better posture, mental clarity, self-confidence, increased flexibility on and off the mat, and a general sense of peace and gratitude.

Professional musical performance employs controlled breath, body awareness, energy, creativity, rhythmic flow, and harmony — all qualities of a successful yoga practice.  Jill draws upon these elements in her classes, helping her students to feel in tune with their bodies and spirit, and those around them.  She professes to have “yoga ADHD” and constantly seeks new ways to experience poses and offer them to her students in a dynamic, playful way.

Restorative Yin Yoga with Becky Maze, RYT-500 @ Breezeway Yoga Studio

RESTORATIVE YIN YOGA with Becky Maze, RYT-500

Restorative Yin yoga is a passive series of poses held for 3-5 minutes each. These poses target the deep connective tissues of the body and the fascia that cover the body to help regulate the flow of energy in the body. It is unique in that you relax in the posture. You soften and it can be meditative. Some benefits:

  • calms the mind
  • regulates energy
  • increases mobility, especially joints, connective tissue/flexibility
  • lowers stress/relaxation
  • greater stamina
  • lubricates joints
  • helps TMJ/migraines
  • aids in Yang practices (flow/vinyasa, etc)
  • teaches you to listen to your body

Practice both Yin/Yang (other types of Yoga) for balance.

Becky Maze is a Knoxville native and has shown an interest in yoga since her college days. She is also a Dental Hygienist and holds a B.S. in Health Education. Her desire to know yoga’s balance intensified in 2005 as her life changed and growing pains ensued. She studied yoga under Asheville’s Cindy Dollar (Iyengar Method) at the Glowing Body and she claims Patty Dougherty to be one of her most precious mentors. She has a love for vinyasa and yin and is a Reiki Master. Her personal yoga journey has brought her into a more balanced lifestyle, which she delights in sharing with others through teaching.

In this class you will be introduced  to the teachings of yoga through physical movement, mediation, breath work and inspiration. This class is perfect for anyone wanting to treat their bodies with the love and respect it desires and deserves. Yoga 4 EveryBODY helps students stretch, learn, grow and be open to greater possibilities. Everyone at any level is welcome and encouraged to attend.

IMG_9143Cheri Pollack has been a student of yoga for almost 15 years. She believes that yoga can help everyBODY age more gracefully with ease, joy and lots of humor. Her practice has helped her find personal strength, stress relief and an inner knowing that “all is well.” Cheri loves to encourage others to let go of what doesn’t serve them and embrace their magnificence. Her classes are designed to compliment any lifestyle and ability level. They are geared to open student’s  to their true potential; physically, spiritually, and creatively. Cheri is a clay and mixed media artist. She teaches ‘Healing through Art Classes” at The Cancer Support Community. Cheri is happily married for over 25 years, mom to three sons who all attend the University of Tennessee and loves living in KnoxVegas! She received her professional yoga teacher training in Asheville at the Asheville Yoga Center in 2014.

Slow Flow Yoga with Meryl Kerns @ Breezeway Yoga Studio

Love Vinyasa flow but think it’s just too fast? This class is for you!

In Slow Burn yoga, you will be challenged in a completely different way. Strengthen your body in a unique process by slowing down the creative flows, forcing you to ignite deeper, stabilizing muscles, focus and steady the mind to stay present and balanced, and become more flexible from holding stretches longer for a fuller release. This class welcomes students of all levels and will leave you with a better understanding of proper alignment and basic anatomy to take with you on your yoga journey.

Meryl’s journey of learning began in 2001, at the age of eleven, when she embarked on her martial arts path within the discipline of Kung Fu. She was trained by a second generation Si Fu assisted by a female Si Fu who was trained in massage therapy. The passion and knowledge of her two teachers, combined with the traditional approach of the school, inspired Meryl’s inquiry into the mechanics of the inner body and holistic healing. Later on, Meryl added Tai Chi to her martial arts practice, which further deepened her mind-body connection. It was Meryl’s female Si Fu who inspired her to pursue holistic healing, massage therapy, and yoga as a profession by treating her throughout the years as she attended the school.

In 2009, Meryl chose Asheville School of Massage and Yoga as the launching point for her education in massage therapy by completing 675 hours of school and completing her license massage training. The Asheville School of Massage and Yoga greatly emphasized the need for student self-care through yoga practice, as well as extending self-care awareness to clients. After starting her own practice,

Meryl quickly grew an extreme passion for the combination of massage and yoga. In 2013, she traveled to Costa Rica to complete her 200 hour yoga teacher training with Frog Lotus Yoga training program. Recently, at the beginning of 2017, she traveled to India to receive not only her 500 hour yoga teacher training  certification, but also a 50 hour yin yoga certification. After that then traveling to Spain to stay at the beautiful yoga retreat centre Suryalila for three months to continue her personal growth and deepen her

yoga knowledge. Now she’s back in Knoxville ready to share all the extensive knowledge and training to all who seek it.

Meryl has spent the last several years developing her skills by working in freelance. Her  working experiences have included practicing out of yoga studios, art festival healing sanctuaries, hospitality massage for multiple music venues, and private appointments. She currently practices integrated massages including Swedish, Deep Tissue, Shiatsu, Thai yoga, and her personal favorite: Myofascial Release. Her multi-faceted training and experience enable Meryl to treat each client with unique and intuitive approach,   inspiring them to take an active part in their own healing.

This class series are for students who already have some experience under their belt. We dive deeper into the Acro practice playing with low foot to hand, pops, turns and twists, dynamic movements and washing machines.  Class is co-taught assisted by Frank Genovise.

Prerequisites include*: Hands-free Bird mount; Hands free bird presses; Cartwheel in to straddle bat; Hop to Star. (*Though students are not required to have mastered each pose, they must know the names of the static poses listed on the AcroKnox AcroYoga Poster (Posters available to buy or review at all classes). 


AcroYoga at Breezeway!

We’re pleased to welcome Rebekah Luhrs back to Breezeway for intermediate and beginner AcroYoga classes. 

For Rebekah, teaching and practicing yoga is a lifestyle. As an individual, it is a way for her to push herself to grow both physically and spiritually. Based on a foundation of trust, communication, and support, the practice of AcroYoga empowers positive growth in individuals, relationships, and communities in the most fundamental ways. Ultimately this growth is what she is passionate about.

Rebekah has been practicing yoga for almost ten years and completed her 200-hour Yoga Teacher Certification Training at the Asheville Yoga Center in North Carolina. She has been practicing AcroYoga since 2011 and is a certified instructor through AcroYoga International. After several years of teaching both in the US and internationally, she is excited to be offering weekly acro classes in Knoxville. Frank Genovise co-teaches most classes. 

AcroYoga is a dynamic partner practice that blends the wisdom of yoga, the dynamic power of acrobatics, and the loving kindness of healing arts.  New content is explored each week while reviewing components taught in previous classes and workshops. Space is provided for students to form strong foundational skills by utilizing spotters. AcroYoga as a practice that is available for every body, age, and ability.
