Alignment Yoga Level (2&3): @ Balanced You Studios
Apr 24 @ 6:00 pm – 7:15 pm

Tuesday 6:00 -7:15pm Alignment Yoga Level (2&3):

This class is for intermediate students. It could be described simply as more of the above with the addition of more advanced poses, regular inversions, beginning seated meditation and beginning pranayama techniques. However, intermediate students should have a quality to their presentation of a pose. This is the progression in awareness that we seek by doing yoga. We train the mind to pay attention starting with the poses and working with precision versus sloppiness. We want “meditation in action”. We want to hold a pose with “effortless effort” allowing us the time for deep observation.. Remember that Yoga and its eight limbs is about the mind and becoming totally aware.

Here are some general guidelines from workshops and/or intensives that were geared towards intermediate students.

An intermediate student should:

  1. Be able to do an unsupported head stand. (sirsasana)
  2. Be able to kick up unassisted into a full hand stand. (adho mukha vrksasana)
  3. Be able to push up unassisted into a full back bend. (urdhva dhanurasana)

This class is taught as a series only and permission from the instructor is necessary.

Ron Felix BS, MPH, RYT

In 1991 Ron Felix opened Knoxville’s first commercial yoga studio, the Knoxville Yoga Center.

Initially, Ron taught Bikram’s (hot yoga) which he learned while living in Key West, Florida.

In 1992 Ron was introduced to the Iyengar method of yoga which is known for its attention paid to precision and alignment. After 25 years of studying and teaching the Iyengar method, participating in over 50 workshops and/or teachers’ trainings, Ron’s classes are a reflection of the love and appreciation he has for the myriad of effects yoga can have on the total “self”.

In June, Ron retired from the daily rigor required to operate a business studio, but plans to continue to teach part-time classes as well as private lessons.

Ron is registered as an RYT and an E-RYT with Yoga Alliance at the 500 hour level and has thousands of hours teaching experience having regularly taught 15-16 classes a week.

Apr 24 @ 6:00 pm – 7:15 pm

This is a great class for all levels, focusing on opening the body and creating space.

Patty Dougherty moved back to Knoxville in 2010 after spending 10 years in Los Angeles studying and practicing yoga and yogic philosophy. Patty is certified in Restorative Yoga with Jillian Pransky, Director of Restorative Yoga with Yoga Works.

She is as gentle and kind in the classroom as she learned to be with herself and her own body. Patty’s goal is to help open the body and find space to breathe and to move – enabling the opportunity for radiant physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health.

Patty is currently leading classes at her studios: BalancedYouStudios, and Breezeway Yoga Studio.

Alignment Yoga Level (1&2) @ Balanced You Studios
Apr 24 @ 7:30 pm – 8:45 pm

Tuesday 7:30 – 8:45pm Alignment Yoga Level (1&2):

This class is a natural progression up from Level 1 (beginner’s), which is the level that focuses mostly on the standing poses or “teaches you to stand on your own two feet first”. In addition to refining and reviewing poses already learned classes will now be themed based.

Examples of common themes would be a back bending class, a forward bending class or a class emphasizing twists. In addition, we will be doing the prep work and any modifications necessary to prepare for a safe and regular inversion practice.

This class is taught as a series only and permission from the instructor is necessary.

Yoga Basics with Amberly @ Breezeway Yoga Studio
Apr 25 @ 9:30 am – 10:30 am

Yoga Basics has something to offer to both beginner and advanced yoga practitioner. Class is slower-paced and focuses on breaking down specific asanas, or postures, including foundational poses commonly seen in vinyasa and other classes. You’ll learn safe alignment through instruction, demonstration, and hands-on assistance.  Beginner students will receive the building blocks to practice regularly and more advanced students will find this class useful in deepening their practice. Class includes practice of various styles of meditation and pranayama (breath work). Learn, play, and maybe even break a sweat in a supportive environment. You don’t need to be able to touch your toes; you just have to be willing to try.

After several years of practice, Amberly chose to deepen her path with yoga by attending Yoga Teacher Training at Yoga Landing in Chattanooga, TN with the inspiring and talented Jessica Jollie. After learning more than she ever expected from Jessica and the Yoga Landing faculty, Amberly immediately began assisting and teaching in the Knoxville area thanks to the wonderful Patty Dougherty. Amberly teaches and practices many forms of yoga including: Ashtanga, Vinyasa, Yinyasa, Restorative, and Yin.

Mindful Yoga with Judson @ Breezeway Yoga Studio
Apr 26 @ 5:45 pm – 7:15 pm

Mindful Yoga with Judson Nichols moves to Breezeway Yoga Studio

judson_garden-namasteThe focus of Mindful Yoga is to bring the mind back into the body. Generally, our attention is scattered all over: the past, the future, other places.  In our practice, we bring our mental focus back to the body. We search our body for stress and tension with our mind’s eye, and then we practice letting it go. Along the way, we also become stronger, more flexible, and more at peace.

Call or text questions to 865-963-6042.

About Judson:

Judson Nichols enjoys tailoring his classes around his students’ specific needs. Every body is different, and each has its own path back to a state of balance. Since he began teaching yoga in Knoxville in 2008, the emphasis of his teaching has been to guide each student toward a happy medium. If we’re too stressed, then we learn to relax more.  If we’re too prone to multi-tasking, then we learn to focus the attention. If we’re too tight, we get more flexible. If we’re too flexible, then we stabilize the joints.  It’s all about bringing conscious choices and awareness to your life to give you more freedom to be who you need to be.

When he’s not teaching yoga, he enjoys spending time with his wife and their small herd of cats. His other work involves writing custom software to help businesses become more efficient.

You can email him at judson@judsonnichols.com.  His website is http://judsonnichols.com/yoga.

Power Yoga with Jill Bartine @ Breezeway Yoga Studio
Apr 28 @ 9:00 am – 10:15 am

Jill Bartine, M.M., RYT

JillB_headshotJill Bartine has been a teacher for more than half her life. As a classically-trained flutist who performs with the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, her first outlet for her teaching passion was music.  She is thrilled to now include yoga to her teaching repertoire after completing her 200-hour RYT certification in August 2011.  By the fall of 2013, she had already logged over 1,000 teaching hours, which made her eligible to register with Yoga Alliance as an E-RYT 200 (Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher).  She also holds a Bachelor of Music in flute performance from Northwestern University and a Master of Music from the University of Tennessee.

Having never been a fitness buff, Jill stepped into her first yoga class in 2002, and it was love at first sight.  Over the years that she has practiced, she is continually amazed at the benefits yoga has brought to her life – physical fitness, better posture, mental clarity, self-confidence, increased flexibility on and off the mat, and a general sense of peace and gratitude.

Professional musical performance employs controlled breath, body awareness, energy, creativity, rhythmic flow, and harmony — all qualities of a successful yoga practice.  Jill draws upon these elements in her classes, helping her students to feel in tune with their bodies and spirit, and those around them.  She professes to have “yoga ADHD” and constantly seeks new ways to experience poses and offer them to her students in a dynamic, playful way.

Jill teaches power and vinyasa group classes at multiple studios in Knoxville and also enjoys teaching private sessions for individuals and small groups. Connect with Jill via email:  flutistyogini@gmail.com ,  facebook.com/flutistyogini,

His teacher training was focused on breath centered yoga, and also included meditative study and practice to further develop skills in the delivery of effective yoga instruction. Yoga for You  |  Sundays, 9:00-10:00AM

Sunday. Yoga. You. Three words that go together like peas and carrots…and potatoes. 😉 Get the most out of your Sunday and join Jennie for this fun and encouraging class. Incorporating a blend of yoga styles and poses to accommodate any and all levels of practitioner—This is *Yoga For You*.  We’ll offer posture breakdowns and modifications along with more vigorous options to take your practice to the next level, if you wish to. There will also be opportunities to explore the deeper, internal dynamics of a pose and how it feels within your own body. Discover your edge and work to it. Be kind and patient with yourself. Leave class with a calmer mind and spirit, a strong supple body, and a gentle heart. Make Sunday count!

Jennie Berger, RYT 200

It was clear from an early age that Jennie and yoga were destined for one another. A youth gymnast, she also dabbled in various forms of dance and eventually, in 1993, found a local yoga studio in town and took her first class. She instantly fell in love and over the 20 plus years that followed has continued to explore various types of yoga styles and teachers around the world.

Jennie’s training is rooted in classic Ashtanga yet she’s not very traditional when it comes to yoga, or life for that matter. 😉 She adores stirring her own blend of colors into every class and sees each practice as a blank canvas with the opportunity to paint any picture you want. This is, after all, your practice. She has a deep passion for animals, music, health and nutrition, and wants nothing more than to share her love of yoga with others.

Yin Yoga with Becky Maze, RYT-500 @ Breezeway Yoga Studio
Apr 29 @ 5:30 pm – 6:15 pm

YIN YOGA with Becky Maze, RYT-500

Yin yoga is a passive series of poses held for 3-5 minutes each. These poses target the deep connective tissues of the body and the fascia that cover the body to help regulate the flow of energy in the body. It is unique in that you relax in the posture. You soften and it can be meditative. Some benefits:

  • calms the mind
  • regulates energy
  • increases mobility, especially joints, connective tissue/flexibility
  • lowers stress/relaxation
  • greater stamina
  • lubricates joints
  • helps TMJ/migraines
  • aids in Yang practices (flow/vinyasa, etc)
  • teaches you to listen to your body

Practice both Yin/Yang (other types of Yoga) for balance.

Becky Maze is a Knoxville native. She has shown an interest in yoga since her college days. This desire to know yoga’s balance intensified in 2005 as her life changed and growing pains ensued. She is also a Dental Hygienist and holds a B.S. in Health Education. She considers nutrition and overall health an important consideration in yoga practice. She believes that our body is but a vessel for our spirit and we need to treat it kindly. She has been privileged to be involved in the lives of several local cancer survivors over the last 20 years.

She studied yoga under Asheville’s Cindy Dollar (Iyengar Method) at the Glowing Body and she claims Patty Dougherty to be one of her most precious mentors. She has a love for vinyasa and yin. She practices Reiki as well. Her personal yoga journey has brought her into a more balanced lifestyle, which she delights in sharing with others through teaching. Yoga truly helps one find that balance of mind, body, and soul and guides you into the present moment where life truly exist!
